DIY Children's Library Wall

Thursday, July 9, 2015

Hello, Hello again! We are in full swing summer mode over here and getting ready to welcome our second baby boy at the end of this year. With new additions to our family, comes new changes and new spaces for my son's room. Since James and the new baby will eventually share a room we have decided to start transforming his room into a big boy room where he can get excited about getting out of a crib and having his own space to create and use his imagination.

A big part of James' daily activites include reading books and of course we have a MILLION. They are pilled in the closet, dumped in baskets, and hidden in drawers. So we decided to clean out his books and make a place for them. On a wall in James' room. This DIY is SO easy and SO cheap you will probably think I'm playing a prank on you. So let's get started!

Figure out where you want to have your library wall and measure to see how many ledges you will need. I am using the Ribba Picture Ledge from IKEA. They come in two sizes, I got the 45 1/4" because our wall had the length for it. Don't be afraid to get creative and play around with the layout of your ledges. For our space I thought three ledges would be best, even though I know James can't reach the top shelf I wanted to add height to the space so three was the magic number. I then marked where each ledge was going to go, about 1.5 feet between each one. Screw those puppies in and done!

I wanted to add a personal touch to the space since I know the baby won't be using those books for awhile, we decided to add James' name to the top to know its his library. I went to Joann's fabric store to get some cardboard letters to paint and hang above the ledges. I was AMAZED to see how many letter options there were. I went with the medium sized letters in cardboard but as you can see below there are many different options, varying in price, size, texture and color.

Wood Letters

Cardboard Letters

Burlap Letters

Chalk Letters

Flag Letters

Marquee Letters

Styrofoam Letters

Distressed wood letters

Decorative wood letters

I bought our letters, picked our paint, and sat down during the Bachelorette and painted away. By the end of the rose ceremony they were done! The next day I hung them above the library and James and I started filing the ledges with books. He LOVES going to his wall and picking out which books we will read at night, he also loves putting them back on the ledges and a toddler who cleans up after himself makes me one happy mama!

Total time for project: 3 hours
Total cost: $48
Total amount of fun: Endless!

What a cute but functional space! Love the thought of ledges rather than bookshelves, so much easier to find what you want!

This is darling!! My kids would love it. If only I could find a clean corner of the playroom... ;)

I just love this! It's nice that he can see the fronts of the books when he wants to choose one, also. I'm a huge fan of good old-fashioned books in this age of technology. Great project!

This is so fun! I don't know how you ever chose letters- I had no idea there were that many options at JoAnns! And your little man is too cute with his fuzzy bed head :)
