I am so excited to share this DIY because it holds a special little spot in my heart. When I found out I was pregnant with James I cried for two days straight because I wanted a girl so bad. And of course about a month ago we found out our second baby on the way is, you guessed it A BOY! Even though we are thrilled to have another boy, I was a bit sad that my life will not be filled with pink, lace and girly little things just yet, (I'm hoping I'll have enough strength someday to have a third and maybe just maybe a girl). Anyways my dear friend, and design client came to me and said she wanted to turn her daughters room in a "big" girl room. I was so excited, not only because this little girl is the girl I have always wanted, but because she wanted to do a whimsical, bohemian inspired room (my favorite). My first thought was a wall of dream catchers, and of course I told my client we are making them! We finished them yesterday and they turned out way better then I could have imagined. Below is the step by step process on how to make them. The best part is the options are truly endless with this project.
Step 1: Pick your colors, inspiration, and size.
We knew we were going to do a whole wall of them, so we decided to do five dream catchers in three different sizes. Two small, two medium, and one large. The colors in the room were neutral tones with pinks, peaches, and turquoise. So to play off those colors and make the dream catchers a little more eye catching we decided to do the following colors; Light Peach, light Pink, White, Grey, and cream.
Step 2: Buy your tools.
We headed out to Joann's Craft store and got EVERYTHING there. For the base we used different sized wood embroidery hoops. Then the fun part, we got one yard of white cotton fabric, 1/2 yard of light peach crepe silk, 1/2 yard of pink chiffon, a spool of grey lace trim, assorted cream trims, and white ruffled lace trim. We also got a package of cream/gold knitting yarn and some white feathers.
Step 3: Wrap your hoops.
You could do this many different ways. You can paint the hoops, leave them bare or wrap them. We decided to wrap them with the cream/gold knitting yarn. This took several tedious hours.
Step 4. Start designing.
Since we were doing several dream catchers I knew the big one would be the one to stand out the most. I used almost all the different trims and fabric we got. I started by cutting half an inch to one inch of fabric and ripping it from the seam so the edges would be raw. I also did this with the crepe silk and chiffon fabric. Then I started tying the fabric to the bottom half of the hoop. I tied one piece of fabric on each side so that it would be even and then filled in the center. There is no right way of doing this so be creative. I wish I could tell you some magical way but I just kept tying different fabric and trim until I thought it looked full and pretty. On two of the dream catchers I wanted to fill in the hoops so I wrapped the knitting yarn all around the outside of it in no particular order then when I thought it looked good enough I just cut it and tied it to one side of the hoop. Last but not least I wrapped some feathers to the end of the knitting yarn and hung those last so you can better see where to place them.
Step 5. Hang your masterpiece
After all the dream catchers were finished and we didn't need anymore strips, we hung them on the wall and started cutting the bottom to the length we wanted. I like it when they are not all one length so again I kinda winged it, cutting where I thought it needed to be shorter and so on.
Step 6. Grab a glass of wine and marvel in your handy work.
Do I really need to explain this one???
Sorry I don't have that many step by step photos, I always seem to forget that when I'm in the middle of a project. If you have any questions leave them in the comments below and I'll do my best to answer them.
